How To Find Out If Links Are Dofollow Or Nofollow – Comment Or Forum Links

Although WordPress blog comment links by default are nofollow you can find blogs where comment links are dofollow. Likewise, some forum signature links are dofollow some are not. It is still believed that dofollow links hold value with respect to search engines and rankings. For this reason many bloggers strive to find dofollow blogs to comment on or join forums hoping that their signature links are dofollow. But how to find out if links are dofollow or nofollow when commenting or when joining the forums?

With respect to commenting, in the recent years, many bloggers came to believe that commentluv (WordPress plugin) links are dofollow. Even expensive software has been developed to seek out comentluv enabled blogs for that reason. However, the notion that all comentluv comment links are dofollow is not exactly right. I have found that many are but quite a number are nofollow. This depends on the settings the webmaster chooses for his comments.

It is fairly simple to find out if the comment links are dofollow or nofollow. The easiest way to determine if comment links are dofollow or not do the following:

After the download of the Quirk Search Status Add-on the Quirk icon will show up at your browser’s navigation bar.

Once you install the Quirk Add-on it is very simple to find out if the links are dofollow or nofollow . Simply, right click on the icon. In the expanded window tick off: “Highlight Nofollow Links” and close the window.

When you visit any website and the tool is on, you will find all nofollow links highlighted in pink. The dofollow links will not be highlighted. Below are examples of a wordpress website without commentluv (nofollow bu default) and a wordpress website where commentluv has been added.

1. WordPress Blog without commenluv – notice that all links are pink and therefore nofollow

2. WordPress blog with commentluv. I implemented commentluv  on my blog. Notice that neither the name (and in this case the keywords) nor the link to the commenter’s post are highlighted (red arrows); that means they are dofollow.  This way not only the commenter will get a dofollow link to his website for specific keywords, but he will also get dofollow link to his post.

Using the Quirk tool you can also easily find out if forum links in signatures or profiles are dofollow or not. recently, I came across a question on the popular Warrior Forum from a newbie who wanted to find out if the signature links in that forum are dofollow. I knew that they were but to reassure myself I performed a Quirk test and the results are below. The signature links are indeed dofollow.

Notice that user names are nofollow (highlighted pink with the Quirk tool) and the blue signature links are not highlighted, hence they are dofollow.

If you ever wondered how to find out of the links are dofollow or nofollow, I hope this post helped. As you can see, with the Quirk tool the  task is quite simple. I also like to use Quirk to check my posts to ensure that I am assigning nofollow attributes where necessary, before I publish my posts. Dita, for those who worry about installing too complicated Firefox addons that may slow down the browser, there is also a lighter addon than Quirk, it’s called NoDoFollow and it does only that – highlights nofollow links.

      Hi Sorina,

Thanks for the suggestion. I have tested the nodofollow Add-on and I found that this Add-on highlights both the dofollow and nofollow links. The nofollow were highlighted in pink and the dofollow were highlighted in blue blocks (including my nav bar and all my posts)

I found that quite distracting as opposed to Quirk that only highlights the nofollows in pink.

Also, Quirk has other advantages and hence it is more “heavy”.

For those that are interested in exploring the lighter nodofollow Firefox Add-on, the link is: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/nodofollow/
